Quarters for the Jukebox

Out this week — April 15

In the jukebox for this week (note: no way I’m reviewing all of these, but here’s what caught my eye … for reasons of appreciation or amusement):

  • The Constantines (album): Kensington Heights. I’ll review this later.
  • The Weepies (album): Hideaway. I don’t know this band, but there’s a cartoon whale on the cover.
  • Annea Lockwood (album): A Sound Map of the Danube. No lie, this is an album of just what it sounds like to ride down a river … no music (other than some distant church bells) … just water … and goats … .
  • The Duke Spirit (album): Neptune. I’ll review this later.
  • Jakob Dylan (single): Something Good This Way Comes. I’m a sucker for Wallflowers and will listen to this later in the week.
  • Chris Taylor (album): Take Me Anywhere. He’s new to me and sounds like emotive pop … not sure yet if he’s contemporary Christian or not.
  • Ace Young (single): Addicted. Yup–that “Ace.” As in, the American Idol guy, and it sounds just like you think it would.
  • Yonder Mountain String Band (album): Mountain Tracks: Vol. 5. Finger pickin’ good.
  • Ferbi Boys (album): Ferbi Boys - Dizzy Factory.
  • Ingrooves Symphony Orchestra (album): Switched on Bach. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s pretty traditional renditions.
  • Grandson (single): Lean to the Side.
  • Laura Cantrell (album): Trains and Boats and Planes. I doubt I’ll review … reminds me of a folk country Aimee Mann.
  • Morgan Heritage (album): Mission in Progress. Reggae rock.
  • One Chance (featuring Yung Joc) (single): U Can’t. I’ll take a listen … first impression is it sounds very ordinary (with repeated “Hey” and lyrics about Patron).
  • Phantom Planet (album): Raise the Dead. I’ll review.
  • Worth Dying For (album): Worth Dying For. Christian emo-punk.
  • Pendulum (single): Propane Nightmares. I’m not sure what to make of this yet … part Latin, part rock, part video game … .

Let me know if you’re interested in other Lovely Music releases. Our next release is a spoken-word opera in which the protagonist reminisces about people he once knew who led dual lives of various sorts. cheers.

My wife’s a big fan of The Weepies. I’ll have to pull that off Napster for her. Thanks for the heads-up.

andrea — sounds interesting. I checked your site — pretty unique company you’ve got there. I listen to pretty much anything (except R.E.M.), and will keep an eye out for the “opera.”

Justin — The Weepies were new to me, but I listened through a good chunk of their new album yesterday … good enough I plan to listen some more later.
